Chapter Sixteen
The future is much like the present, only longer. —Don Quisenberry
Face burning from a rush of emotion, Rebecca swallowed hard, unable to tear her eyes away from the train wreck.
“My God, Vanessa, turn that fucking thing off!” Ash’s mortified tone sounded a long way off, smothered by the roaring filling her head. A thousand insects buzzed, making her hold her hands up to her ears to dislodge them. But no amount of shaking her head could dislodge the annoying sound or the devasting image. Right there, right where she had just been, Ash and Vanessa had gone at it like a pair of damn rabbits.
She pushed past Ash, who reached out a hand as if to stop her, exiting the room in a whirlwind. Finding herself in the hallway, she could not face anyone. She raced toward the Entrance Hall that led outside. Hurrying past the uniformed guard, she rushed down the stone steps and stood at the bottom, surveying the manicured grounds. Which way to go? A path that led to an orchard looked inviting and she jogged along it, wanting nothing more than to disappear into the trees. If she were back in Canada, she’d head for her cottage at Delta Beach, curl up in front of the fireplace, drink wine and read a good mystery. Anything to blur the godawful image burning behind her retinas.
Why now? She swiped at the tears unexpectedly filling her eyes. Just when things couldn’t get any more hectic and weird, this had to be added. She felt overloaded. Swamped by just too darn much information. The air turned cooler as the path led into the canopy of trees. She slowed her step, finding solace being alone in nature. She needed time. Time to sort things through. Time to know what to do next.
Coming across a bench, she sat, tucking her skirt around her legs and her hands under her thighs as she’d often sat as a child. The fragrance of blossoms scented the air, filling her with nostalgia. Her adopted grandparents had a farm in the Marquette area of Manitoba’s Interlake. She’d spent summers there, helping with chores like those damn annoying chickens. She smiled lopsidedly at the memory, but her mind was unable to give up the ghost of what she had just witnessed, try as she might. The image was too stubborn, but now that the shock was receding, she found it one thing to know in theory that Ash and Vanessa had been together, but quite another to see the pair blatantly going at it like that. Why had that happened? Was Vanessa that angry at her for accusing her of being a thief? Jealousy seemed the additional culprit. She sighed. A woman spurned and all that. She hadn’t accepted her help about finding out her birth father either. Payback’s a bitch, eh. But partially deserved. After all, everyone had warned her that Ash was a playboy.
The sound of twigs snapping underfoot alerted her to company. She glanced in the direction of the noise, watching for movement among the fruit trees.
